What is this medicine used for?
Hypertension
- Asmonotherapy or as a component of a multiple-drug regimen in the stepped care approach.
Heart Failure
- Treatment of chronic heart failure with reduction of systolic ventricular function, in combination with diuretics and, when appropriate, digitalis and beta-blockers
Left Ventricular Dysfunction After Myocardial Infarction
- To improve survival following myocardial infarction in clinically stable patients with left ventricular dysfunction manifested as an ejection fraction ≤40% and to reduce the incidence of overt heart failure and subsequent hospitalizations for congestive heart failure in these patients.
Diabetic Nephropathy
- Treatment of macroproteinuric diabetic nephropathy in patients with Type I diabetes.
How much and how often should you use this medicine?
General Dosing Recommendation:
- Captopril should be taken one hour before meals.
- Dosage must be individualized according to patient’s profile and blood pressure response.
Hypertension
Usual Initial Dose: 25 mg two or three times a day
Heart Failure
Usual Initial Dose: 25 mg three times a day
Left Ventricular Dysfunction after Myocardial Infarction
- Initial Dose: After a single dose of 6.25 mg, captopril therapy should be initiated at 12.5 mg three times a day.
- Maintenance Dose: 50 mg three times a day
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Captopril or any other ingredient
- Diagnosed with angioneurotic edema
- Pregnant or breastfeeding: may cause injury or death of the developing fetus
- Antacids such as aluminum hydroxide, magnesium carbonate: impair absorption of the medicine
- Aurothiomalate: facial flushing, vomiting, low blood pressure
- Lithium: increased risk of lithium toxicity
