What is this medicine used for?
- Lower respiratory tract infections, including bronchitis and mild to moderately severe community acquired pneumonia.
- Upper respiratory tract infections, including sinusitis and pharyngitis/ tonsillitis (azithromycin monohydrate is not the substance of first choice for the treatment of pharyngitis and tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes. For this and for the prophylaxis of acute rheumatic fever penicillin is the treatment of first choice)
- Inflammations of the middle ear
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Uncomplicated Chlamydia trachomatis urethritis and cervicitis
How much and how often should you use this medicine?
Children and adolescents over 45 kg body weight and adults, including the elderly
- The total dosage of azithromycin monohydrate is 1500 mg which is spread either over three days (500 mg once daily) or over five days (500 mg as a single dose on the first day and thereafter 250 mg once daily).
In uncomplicated Chlamydia trachomatis urethritis and cervicitis the dosage is 1000 mg per os as a single dose.
Method of Administration
- Azithromycin monohydrate 500 mg should be administered as a single daily dose.
- Azithromycin monohydrate 500 mg can be taken independently of the meals.
Contraindications
- When taking antacids such as aluminum hydroxide, magnesium carbonate
- When taking digoxin
